Essential Safety That Saves Lives
Smoke detectors are one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your home or business, but they’re often overlooked—until it’s too late. Whether you’re building, renovating, or upgrading an older property, smoke alarm installation is not just a smart move, it’s a legal requirement. Modern detectors do more than beep when there's smoke; they offer early warning systems that can give you and your loved ones the time needed to get to safety.
At Greg Keft Electrical, we supply, install, and test compliant smoke detectors across Port Macquarie and surrounding areas, helping you stay protected and meet current Australian safety standards. Our team ensures your detectors are correctly placed, interconnected where needed, and powered with long-life batteries or hard-wired options for extra security.

Upgrades, Testing & Maintenance Made Easy
If your smoke alarms are over ten years old, chirping non-stop, or simply not installed in the right places, it’s time for an upgrade. Smoke detector laws in NSW have changed over the years, and what passed inspection a decade ago may no longer meet today’s standards. We’ll assess your property, recommend the best detectors for your needs (including photoelectric models for faster detection), and install them in accordance with fire safety regulations. We can also interconnect alarms across multiple rooms or levels, so if one goes off, they all do—giving everyone in the house an alert, no matter where the fire starts.
Alongside new installations, we also offer testing and maintenance services to make sure your existing alarms are working correctly and positioned for maximum effectiveness.
Fire protection doesn’t have to be complicated—just smart, compliant, and handled by professionals who care about your safety.

Where should smoke detectors be installed in a home?
Smoke detectors should be installed on the ceiling in every bedroom, hallway, and living area. For two-storey homes, detectors are also required at the top of stairways. They should be positioned away from air vents, ceiling fans, and corners to ensure optimal performance. In most modern homes, interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms are required, and they must comply with Australian Standard AS 3786.
How often should smoke alarms be replaced?
Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years—even if they appear to be working. Over time, sensors lose sensitivity, making them less effective at detecting smoke. The manufacture date is usually printed on the back of the unit, and if it’s more than 10 years old, it’s time for a replacement. Regular testing is also important—at least once a month.
Do smoke alarms need to be hard-wired or can they run on batteries?
Both options are available, but newer homes and rental properties typically require hard-wired smoke alarms with battery backup. Battery-only models are still allowed in some cases but must use long-life lithium batteries. Hard-wired alarms are more reliable and ensure protection even if the battery fails.
